In approximately2001 it wasrealised that swimmers with Down Syndrome were being outclassed in competition by other people with learning disabilities who do not have the same physical disabilities that are often associated with Down Syndrome. For this reason the Down Syndrome International Swimming Organisation (DSISO) was created. In response to this our Organisation was set up to identify swimmers in Ireland who may meet the internationally laid down entry requirements and provide the opportunity for them to swim at International andWorld level. In 2002 we participated in the first World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Reading, U.K, which was attended by nine countries. Over the following years more countries sent teams to the European and World Championships organised by DSISO.

In 2010 our organisation formed a Company – the Irish Down Syndrome Sporting Organisation, CLG. (IDSSO).We are the internationally recognised governing body of Down Syndrome Sport in Ireland.Team Ireland, through us IDSSO), have participated in International and World Down Syndrome events in U.K, Portugal, Italy, South Africa, Tai Wan and France. We will be competing at the 9th World Down Syndrome Swimming Championships in Canada in July, 2018.

Those who travel to these events never cease to be impressed by the excellent swimming expertise displayed by the athletes. When this is coupled with tremendous enthusiasm, determination and friendliness it makes for an awe-inspiring experience.
